These new scarves by Yasmine Kasem are made from a luxurious organic cotton sourced from a local supplier in Santee, California.
"These scarves are dyed in a special way. I used a combination of synthetic and natural dye for the arugula leaves. The natural dye is a combination of plants that 9th century Arab intellectuals and doctors attributed to the cause of lesbianism -- arugula being one of those plants. So to celebrate Pride Month, I have made these scarves queer with the dye that permeates the very fabric that makes them."
Materials: 100% Organic Linen Gauze. Natural and synthetic dye.
Scarf size: 43 x 43 inches
For every scarf you purchase, the artist is donating two basic cotton masks to the Southern Indian Health Council in San Diego to help support indigenous communities and their health.
RAM is a new program of the San Diego Art Institute, launched in response to the impact of COVID-19 on creative industries.
As the only contemporary cultural institution in Balboa Park, the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) nurtures the creation of groundbreaking art by providing a dedicated exhibition space for the artistic talent that resides in Southern California and Northern Baja to collaborate, exhibit, and thrive.
Through high quality, interactive programming, educational initiatives, and exhibitions, SDAI promotes cultural equity and artistic enrichment within our community and enables diverse audiences to interact with art and artists in meaningful ways.
RAM’s debut is made possible through a grant from U.S. Bank.
